Use of atomoxetine and suicidal ideation in children and adolescents: Results of an observational cohort study within general practice in England

Abstract: This study found no evidence of an increased risk of suicidal ideation during treatment with atomoxetine, compared to the period prior to starting treatment. Amongst age specific subgroups, this risk may change. Nonetheless, individual case assessment suggested a causal relationship in some patients, hence physicians need to be aware of the possibility of developing this event, and furthermore consider how best to detect it in this paediatric population. This study demonstrates the importance of combining quan… Show more

“…The publication years ranged from 2014‐2020. Of the included studies, four 13,15,16,18 were cohort studies and one 14 was self‐controlled case series (SCCS) study. The remaining two 12,17 used cohort and within‐individual (one 17 was SCCS study) study design; thus, estimates provided by population level and within‐individual level analyzes were included in the meta‐analysis based on study design.…”

“…After analysis of randomized controlled trials, a black box warning was issued on atomoxetine mentioning the risk of suicidal ideation 7 . The effects of ADHD medication on suicide attempt have been investigated in an increasing number of epidemiological studies, 12‐18 but the results have been inconsistent. In some studies, 12,14 a lower risk of suicide attempt in patients taking ADHD medication was identified, but not in others 13,15 .…”
