Use of Baby Isao Simulator and Standardized Parents in Hearing Screening and Parent Counseling Education

Abstract: The results of this novel educational activity demonstrate the value of using infant hearing screening and parental counseling simulation sessions to enhance student learning. In addition, this study demonstrates the use of simulation and standardized parents as an important pedagogical tool for audiology students. Students experienced a high level of satisfaction with the learning experience.

“…These results are consistent with the results of a study by Alanazi et al (2016) in which 14 AUD students were examined on how to perform hearing screening and parental counseling via the combined use of trained SPs and a baby simulator. The pre-and postsimulation event questionnaire revealed a significant improvement in the participants' self-rated confidence levels regarding knowledge and skills except two students who scored their overall level of confidence on the post-event questionnaire as being lower than it was when they filled out the pre-event questionnaire.…”

“…Preparing AUD and SLP students for such services begins with proper learning and training, so when healthcare providers' competencies improve, the quality of care improves consequently (Blank, Kimball, McDonald, & Merino, 2003;McNair, 2005). Although the use of simulation in AUD and SLP fields is less than its use in other health professions, simulation can help AUD and SLP students improve their confidence in knowledge and professional competencies in a safe environment without risk to patients (Alanazi et al, 2016). This study examined the effect of using simulation training sessions versus video-recorded case scenarios in teaching the 1-3-6 EHDI timeline to undergraduate AUD and SLP students.…”

“…Traditional training for objective audiometry using normal-hearing volunteers, hearingimpaired volunteers, or manikin simulators has demonstrated improved self-confidence among audiology and speech language pathology students [16,17]. This improved self-confidence has been also demonstrated after "boot-camps" [18], where students can practice with immediate feedback.…”

“…Two studies by colleagues (2016, 2017) reported on the combined use of manikinbased simulations (Gaba, 2004) and standardized family members. Alanazi et al (2016) investigated the effect of the combined use of standardized parents and a baby simulator on students' self-confidence in their hearing screening and parental counseling knowledge and skills. Graduate students in either the second or third year of their educational program participated, along with four standardized parents and one certified sign language interpreter.…”
