“…Horses with lameness and/or swelling at the level of the surgical site were readmitted at the hospital for further examination. Septic arthritis was defined as cytologic synovial inflammation with >30,000 leukocytes/mm 3 , at least 85% polymorphonuclear cells and a total protein concentration of >3.5 g/dL in the synovial fluid, with or without the detection of bacteria after blood culture medium enrichment (Bactec, Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instrument Systems, Sparks, Maryland) …”

“…Superior results have recently been reported with an automated blood culture media enrichment system (79% positive culture from synovial fluid), without the delay normally associated with culture enrichment techniques (Dumoulin et al . ). Regardless, fluid from suspected infected synovial cavities should be submitted for culture, and sensitivity testing may allow better direction of antimicrobial therapy.…”

“…However, the use of blood culture medium enrichment has shown a culture rate of up to 79% of infected joints and allows for fast isolation of bacteria and susceptibility testing. 80 Polymerase chain reaction analysis of bacterial DNA in synovial fluid may also become clinically available in the future. 76 …”
