Use of computers and the Internet by residents in US family medicine programmes

Abstract: Computers, personal digital assistants (PDA), and the Internet are widely used as resources in medical education and clinical care. Educators who intend to incorporate these resources effectively into residency education programmes can benefit from understanding how residents currently use these tools, their skills, and their preferences. The researchers sent questionnaires to 306 US family medicine residency programmes for all of their residents to complete. Respondents were 1177 residents from 125 (41%) prog… Show more

“…Although the research findings provide significant support for online learning as an effective pedagogical method, researchers warn that appropriate instructional design and easy-to-access technology are both key to effective outcomes (8, 9). In fact, a positive by-product of distance learning is the acquisition of advanced computer-based skills (4, 10, 11). …”

Some studies go slightly further and examine barriers to handheld computing [6,7,14,18].…”

“…Information technology is the ‘study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer‐based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware’ (13–16). It aims to apply digital systems to the research and development of rational data management (16) and, in our field, is related to the retrieval, storage and optimal use of biomedical information, data banks and all other knowledge useful for solving clinical problems and for teaching and research; in other words, how medical science is created, modelled, distributed and applied by data management techniques.…”
