Use of Congo red dye-formaldehyde as a new sensitizer-reductant couple for enhanced simultaneous solar energy conversion and storage by photogalvanic cells at the low and artificial sun intensity

Abstract: The photogalvanic cells (PG) are the promising and renewable electrochemical energy devices capable of doing the simultaneous solar power generation and storage. To realize the aim of the practical application of the PG cells in daily life, the electrical output of these cells has to be further enhanced to a level at least comparable to that of the photovoltaic cells. The present study of the PG cells based on so far unexplored Congo red dye-formaldehyde as a photosensitizer-reductant couple along with efficie… Show more

“…6 as that for the blackened H-shaped glass tube based photogalvanic cells. 40 The similar pattern of the concerned changes may be attributed to the similar mechanistic aspect of the light absorption, photoexcitation, intersystem crossing (ISC), redox processes of the sensitizer and reductant molecules, and so on for all the cell designs as explained in Section 3.6 of this manuscript.…”

“…5, the pattern of (a) change of potential with the time during cell charging in sunlight, (b) cell i-V characteristics in illumination, and (c) change in power, potential, and current in dark conditions on retrieval of stored cell power, is same as reported for the similar conventional photogalvanic cells. 40 The value of the FF for the studied cells is low. The FF is directly affected by various factors like shunt resistance type at i sc point, series resistance at V oc point, and sensitizer stability.…”

“…The Pt working electrode has been extensively used in the earlier studies on the Photo galvanic cells 4,12,31,36,37 . Hence, the Pt is considered as a material of choice in the present study, besides being a noble metal, the Pt is also highly resistant to the corrosion.…”
