Use of Electronic Health Record Data to Study the Association of Sugary Drink Consumption With Child Weight Status

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and, to some extent, fruit juice are modifiable risk factors for childhood obesity. Data on consumption have not been previously systematically collected in the electronic health record (EHR) in a way that could facilitate observational research and population health management.

“…33 The excessive consumption of juice and SSBs leads to childhood overweight and obesity. [4][5][6] Therefore, a focused intervention targeting the caregivers of infants prior to the introduction of juice and SSBs offers the opportunity to proactively prevent the development of obesogenic habits. These data could guide the development of intervention strategies in order to delay, reduce, or eliminate the introduction of juice and SSBs in children's diets.…”

“…The screener was piloted in eight clinics from 2017 to 2019, with high rates of uptake: 92% of eligible children were screened in the first year of the pilot. 12 The EHR-based SSB screening process was then expanded throughout our health system in 2020. Staff acceptability of the screener expansion was dependent not only on a sound process, but also on understanding and measuring the impact of staff knowledge and attitudes around SSB consumption.…”

“…2,3 This rise in pediatric obesity rates has been largely attributed to dietary factors. 4,5 Given that the introduction of healthy foods and drinks by parents during the first few years of life is crucial to the development of healthy nutrition and dietary behaviors, [6][7][8][9][10][11] one point of potential intervention is child beverage consumption. 1,9,12,13 Several studies have documented the positive correlation between the early introduction and excess consumption of juice and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), and both overweight and obesity during mid-to late childhood.…”
