“…Previous European research projects have included CHAUFFEUR which developed an "electronic tow-bar" for close following between trucks [4], the German KONVOI project, [5], HAVEit [6] and SARTRE (2009-2012) [7]. There are similar initiatives in the US [8] and in Japan [9].…”

“…Therefore, the spacing in an AHVP could be kept smaller than the normal safe spacing. After referencing the spacing data from other experiments [37–40], the spacing in this paper is pre‐set to 20 m. Assume that dSi,j$d{S}_{i,j}$ represents the spacing between vehicle i$i$ and vehicle j$j$ in the Frenet coordinate system. The pre‐set spacing in an AHVP with four vehicles is defined as dS1,2$d{S}_{1,2}$, dS2,3$d{S}_{2,3}$, and dS3,4$d{S}_{3,4}$.…”

“…The earliest initiatives to test truck platooning began in the early 1990's with a proof-of-concept program from the United States Department of Transportation's Automated Highway System (Ferlis, 2007) and the 1996 European CHAUFFER project (Crolla, 2015). Europe extended their efforts into the 2000's by funding the SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) project in Sweden and Spain (Robinson, Chan, & Coelingh, 2010), and the Konvoi project in Germany (Deutschle, et al, 2010). Those initial efforts used a mix of simulations and experiments to quantify the potential reduction in petroleum consumption.…”
