Use of Expanded Polystyrene (Eps) Beads in Silica-Fume Concrete

Abstract: Concrete is a good constructional material as it posses enough compressive strength for structural purposes, in spite of that concrete has some dis-advantages, one of these main dis-advantages is its high density (2300-2400) kg/m³ .Many trials were made to minimize its density in different ways. Recently Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) granules (98% air) were added to the concrete for this purpose. In this investigation the concrete density is reduced by adding polystyrene granules to the silica-fume concrete. Sili… Show more

“…This was 16.55% and 23.92% lower compared to the control brick. This observation is consistent with Askar's analysis (ASKAR et al, 2019). It was due to the fact that EPS beads are ultralight particles consisting of 98.0% of air.…”

“…Workability is represented as one of the properties of fresh concrete, which is defined as the required internal work to produce fully compacted concrete [ 31 , 32 ]. The fresh properties of concrete may affect the physical, mechanical, and durability performances of the concrete matrix.…”

“…While this reduction in weight becomes almost 11% when the WPSF content is 30%. The decrease in the density of concrete with the increase in WPSF content can be attributed to the weight of the WPSF, which is about 98% air [28]. Thus, there will be a decrease in density due to the increase in air content in the concrete.…”
