Use of eye tracking for assessment of electronic navigation competency in maritime training

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to experiment an assessment method using eye tracking technology in simulator based electronic navigation training of ship officers who play a critical role in maritime accidents. The maritime industry focuses on human factor developing and improving regulations, training requirements and technology to prevent marine casualties. The mandatory use of simulations in maritime training as per international regulations includes competency assessment as a vital process. The study involve… Show more

“…Currently, there are four main methods used to measure eye movements. These methods are Electro-OculoGraphy (EOG), scleral contact lens/search coil, Photo-OculoGraphy (POG) or Video-OculoGraphy (VOG), and video-based combined pupil–corneal reflection [ 49 ]. Electro-OculoGraphy (EOG) was the most used eye tracking method 50 years ago.…”

“…Therefore, this method has a limited experimental time of use of around 30 min per session [ 123 ]. Photo-oculography (POG) or video-oculography (VOG) comprise several eye movement tracking techniques and are based on the measurement of the relative position of the reflected image of an infrared source on the cornea and the pupil centre [ 49 ]. The disadvantage of POG or VOG is that the quality of measurements can be affected by head movements and blinking artifacts.…”

“…Currently, there are only a few researches of eye behavior for marine operations. For example, Atik & Arslan (2019) captured eye movement data from ship officers in simulation exercises and proposed a method for assessing competency between novice and expert operators in navigation training; Hareide & Ostnes (2017) collected eye tracking data from both simulator and field studies for analysis and presented a recommended visual scan path for the maritime navigators. In contrast, there are many studies about experience and expertise issue using eye trackers regarding in automobile and aviation areas.…”

“…Similarities and dissimilarities of eye behavior between novice and expert are outlined and discussed. The study of Atik & Arslan ( 2 ) involves capturing and analyzing eye movement data of ship officers with sea experience in simulation exercises for assessing competency. Significant differences were found between electronic navigation competencies of expert and novice ship officers.…”
