Use of MMPI subtypes in predicting completion of a residential alcoholism treatment program.

Abstract: To obtain data on patient characteristics relevant to treatment outcome, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was administered to 86 men 3-5 days following their admission to a 30-day residential alcoholism treatment program. Cluster analyses yielded three subtypes whose mean MMPI code lypes were as follows: Type I comprised a 4-2-8 code type, with marked additional pathology: Type II comprised a 4-9/9-4 code type; and Type III comprised a 2-4/4-2 code type. “…The inverse relationship noted between the endorsement of somatic complaints and the number of days spent in the hospital is also intuitively reasonable, as it would be expected that some of the somatic phenomena associated with early withdrawal would dissipate to meaningful extent over a relatively brief period of time. This pattern is also not inconsistent with previous studies (e.g., Sheppard, Smith, & Rosenbaum, 1988) reporting a generalized decrease in subjective distress and psychopathology during the course of rehabilitation.…”

“…Greenberg, Otero, & Villanueva (1994) found a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder to be predictive of dropout among 316 individuals in a dual diagnosis inpatient unit, while other demographic variable and Axis-I comorbidity were not associated with dropout. Finally, Sheppard, Smith, and Rosenbaum (1988) reported that of 86 alcoholic men in a residential alcoholism treatment program, those who dropped out scored significantly higher on scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) suggesting the presence of sociopathic characteristics such as poor impulse control, interpersonal difficulties, and conflicts in relation to authority figures.…”
