Use of Morphometric Variables for Differentiating Spanish Hound Breeds

Abstract: SUMMARY:The term Podencos refers to a group of dog breeds from Spain and classification in Group 5 of dog breeds by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The aim of this study was to compare traits morphometric breeds of Podencos; Canario, Ibecenco, Andaluz (small, medium and large) and Orito. Ten morphometric variables were measured in 385 animals (245 females and 140 males), head length, muzzle length, height at withers, rump height, body length, head width, rump width, chest depth, chest girth an… Show more

“…Multivariate analysis, including principal components and cluster, is an efficient method for sorting buffaloes according to productive and reproductive potential to assist in the selection and culling of animals, and to allow adjusting the management. It is important to note that these techniques have been used in livestock production and genetic improvement to decrease the sample space of the traits, and to assemble homogeneous groups as well as for other purposes (Kadegowda et al, 2008;Neser et al, 2008;González et al, 2011;Ventura et al, 2012;Vohra et al, 2015).…”

“…Morphological diversity is a good reflector of ecological selection regimes and history of a breed (González et al, 2011). In addition, phenotypes are an expression of genetic characteristics, modified by environmental conditions and variance in both genetics and environment may affect phenotypic variance (Yakubu et al, 2010;Kunene et al, 2014).…”

“…Due to their preliminary nature, the results of the abovementioned part will not be discussed in the present paper. The options for type of dog were: galgos from Spain, other sighthounds, podencos (i.e., a group of primitive-type non-sighthound Spanish hound breeds [ 8 ], who are rescued and placed for adoption in a similar way as galgos are) and other dogs (i.e., dogs which were neither sighthounds nor podencos, adopted mainly from local shelters, called hereafter Non-Sighthound Non- Podenco -NSNP-dogs). The third section concerned the presence of possibly problematic behaviors (called “behavioral problems”−BP-hereafter) shown by the dog at the moment the questionnaire was completed (i.e., “at present”) and some more information on post-adoption behavior which was slightly different depending on length of time from adoption.…”
