Use of Multibeam and Dual-Beam Sonar Systems to Observe Cavitating Flow Produced by Ferryboats: In a Marine Renewable Energy Perspective

Abstract: Abstract:With the prospect to deploy hydrokinetic energy converters in areas with heavy boat traffic, a study was conducted to observe and assess the depth range of cavitating flow produced by ferryboats in narrow channels. This study was conducted in the vicinity of Finnhamn Island in Stockholm Archipelago. The objectives of the survey were to assess whether the sonar systems were able to observe and measure the depth of what can be cavitating flow (in a form of convected cloud cavitation) produced by one spe… Show more

“…In summary, the present work in conjunction with other ongoing studies such as reference [40,48,49], concludes that multibeam imaging sonar systems can effectively be used to monitor the underwater environment surrounding marine renewable energy devices. Harbour seals, grey seals, orcas, cod, medium to small size fish as well as school of fish could be detected, identified and classified.…”

“…This work also concludes that sonar data in a form of acoustic images or ecograms or simply altimetry can provide a range of information such as bathymetry, biomass, structural inspections of underwater technologies and structures, magnitude and direction of cavitating flows (for example: [27]), underwater navigation among other relevant information vital for deployment, operation and maintenance of MRETs.…”

“…Data from each instrument is treated by its own algorithm and routine. An example given byFigure 4describes how the MBS and DBS data is acquired processed and analysed[26,27].The MBS uses the BlueView sonar developing kit (SDK 3.6) and ProViwer4 software for data . The data is acquired as a sequence of pings.…”

“…Data was pre-processed using a BlueView -SDK 3.6 and ProViwer4 software. The resulting acoustic images were analyzed using Visual Studio and Matlab [8]. The DBS acquired data of acoustic backscatter intensity and range of targets within the acoustic beam path.…”
