Use of natural products in anticytokine therapy

Abstract: This work was designed to study direct anticytokine activity of natural products on the cell model of inflammation. We developed a combination of medicinal plants (calendula, elder, and pansy) with maximum antiinflammatory activity. This combination can be used for pathogenetic therapy of various inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis.

“…In the same work we demonstrated that the composition of lipophilic extract was not altered by gastric digestion. Accordingly, two studies were performed both in vivo [ 5 ] and ex vivo [ 31 ] and revealed that marigold extracts could exert the anti-inflammatory effect even after oral administration. In fact, the consumption of extracts from marigold flowers led to a decrease in plasmatic proinflammatory cytokines (TNF- α and IL-1 β ), indicating a stability of the anti-inflammatory components through stomach passage [ 5 , 31 ].…”

“…Several natural compounds, such as calendula (Calendula officinalis), elder (Sambucus nigra) and violet (Viola sp. ), were demonstrated to possess not only anti-inflammatory, but also antiatherosclerotic effects [81][82][83]. The combination of these herbs was used for the development of a novel dietary supplement (Inflaminat, INAT-Farma, Russia) [84].…”
