Use of near-infrared spectroscopy for prediction of chemical composition of Tifton 85 grass

Abstract: The reduction in the quality, consumption, and digestibility of forage can cause a decrease in animal performance, resulting in losses to the rural producer. Thus, it is important to monitor these characteristics in forage plants to devise strategies or practices that optimize production systems. The aim of this study was to develop and validate prediction models using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to determine the chemical composition of Tifton 85 grass. Samples of green grass, its morphological structure… Show more

“…The results obtained in this study with IVDMD ( R 2 cv = .95) were similar to those observed by Serafim et al (2021), analyzing the IVDMD of 105 forage samples (whole plant, green leaf blade, stalk + sheath and senescent material) and Tifton 85 grass hay ( Cynodon spp. ), found an excellent estimate by NIRS with an R 2 c value of .93.…”

“…The basis of the NIRS analysis is the absorption of radiation by certain molecular bonds (O–H, C–H, N–H and C–O, mainly) at specific wavelengths in the near infrared (NIR) region. The NIRS technology has been used for some time to predict the nutritional value of forages, silage and hay (Andueza et al, 2016; Cleland et al, 2018; Lobos et al, 2013; Massignani et al, 2021; Molano et al, 2016; Raffrenato et al, 2018; Serafim et al, 2021).…”

“…The advancement of technologies and pasture management are essential to the livestock sector. Pastures are a source of livelihood for more than 800 million people worldwide (Quiroz et al, 2021) and in Brazil they play a high economic role in beef production (Serafim et al, 2021). Globally, grassland soils store more stable carbon (C) than other terrestrial ecosystems, playing a key role in climate change mitigation (Escribano et al, 2020;Raiesi, 2021).…”
