Use of New York City medium for improved recovery of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from clinical specimens

Abstract: New York City (NYC) and Martin-Lewis (ML) media were evaluated comparatively for their ability to support the growth of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from clinical specimens. A total of 1,010 urethral, cervical, pharyngeal, and rectal specimens were collected from walk-in patients attending a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases. A total of 187 and 165 isolates of gonococci were cultivated on NYC and ML media, respectively, with 161 of these isolates being recovered on both media. Overall, the use of NYC medium re… Show more

“…The absence of the enzyme confirms the original WGA-reactive bacteria as N. gonorrhoeae. Both procedures require 5 to 15 min to complete and therefore represent a considerable savings in time and effort over other techniques (2,4,7,9,10,14,17,21).…”

“…Most gonococcal isolates were obtained from the City-County Board of Health (Louisville, Ky.) and were used without subculture. The isolates were cultured on Thayer-Martin medium (21) or modified New York City medium (14). Several neisserial strains were also obtained from the American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, Md., and the Office of Biologics, Food and Drug Administration, Bethesda, Md.…”

“…We modified the original formulation of NYC medium and found that the MNYC medium would support the rapid growth of stock strains of M. pneumoniae (9). In addition, we also found that modified formulations of NYC medium were superior to Martin-Lewis medium for the recovery of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from clinical specimens (8,10,11).…”

“…As reported, the use of this NYC medium resulted in enhanced recovery of N. gonorrhoeae isolated from clinical specimens as compared with the original NYC medium. Furthermore, in a recent evaluation comparing NYC medium with Martin-Lewis medium (11), we showed that the use of NYC medium results in a 13% overall increased recovery of gonococci isolated from clinical material.…”
