Use of nylon 6/polyethylene blends in the preparation of textile yarns

Abstract: Nylon 6 fibers are extensively used by the textile industry because of their excellent properties for yarn manufacturing. In this work, we show that it is possible to prepare yarns of reduced cost with blends of nylon 6 and polyethylene (PE), a lower priced polymer. Blends of nylon 6 and PE (nylon 6/PE) were tested in different compositions. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analyses and tensile tests showed better compatibilization in blends whose components had similar melt flow indices. Without ad… Show more

“…Much effort has been expended to modify the mechanical properties of PA‐6 by its blending with different thermoplastics, such as polyolefins. The compatibilization of the PA‐6/HDPE blend is important because PA‐6 presents high stress and flexural resistance together with good chemical resistance to polar solvents, whereas HDPE presents a high impact resistance and low moisture absorbance 4. Compatibilization of the immiscible PA‐6/HDPE blend is important for applications in food packaging because of the good oxygen barrier properties of the polyamide together with the moisture barrier properties of the polyolefin 5…”

“…This type of polymer blend is applicable in the field of textile fibres as well. Scientific research investigating the performances of polyethylene/polyamide 4 and polypropylene/polyamide [5][6][7][8][9] (PP/PA) blend fibres has already been published.…”
