Use of off-road vehicles and mitigation of effects in Alaska permafrost environments: A review

Abstract: / Use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) in permafrostaffected terrain of Alaska has increased sharply over the past two decades. Until the early 1960s, most ORV use was by industry or government, which employed heavy vehicles such as industrial tractors and tracked carriers. Smaller, commercial ORVs became available in the 1960s, with the variety and number in use rapidly increasing. Wheeled and tracked ORVs, many used exclusively for recreation or subsistence harvesting by individuals, are now ubiquitous in Alaska.… Show more

“…Although much attention has been given to the impacts of several types of off-road vehicles (ORVs) in northern ecosystems (Rickard and Brown, 1974;Slaughter et al, 1990;Racine and Ahlstrand, 1991;Forbes, 1992;Emers et al, 1995), no attention has been given to airboats. In Alaska, areas inaccessible to conventional boats and ORVs include shallow rivers and streams, some wetlands near coastal areas, and several large Alaskan lowland basins, such as the Kuskokwim River-Nixon Flats area, the Yukon Flats, the Selawik Lowlands, and the Innoko Basin.…”

“…For example, Argounova-Law [50] emphasized social significance as the main feature defining roads. Moreover, the proliferation of modern all-terrain and 4WD motorized vehicles in remote parts of the world imposes less stringent requirements on road construction and maintenance [51], while affecting the environment [52][53][54].…”
