Use of optical absorption indices to assess seasonal variability of dissolved organic matter in Amazon floodplain lakes

Abstract: Abstract. Given the importance of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the carbon cycling of aquatic ecosystems, information on its seasonal variability is crucial. In this study we assess the use of optical absorption indices available in the literature based on in situ data to both characterize the seasonal variability of DOM in a highly complex environment and for application in large-scale studies using remote sensing data. The study area comprises four lakes located in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Re… Show more

“…In contrast, high NO 3 − and NO 2 − concentrations ( Figure 6 ) are quite near the guideline values for drinking-water quality (maximum admissible concentrations) and might apply, for instance, to a surface water body receiving inputs from contaminated groundwater [ 36 ]. Moreover, increasing A o and decreasing S mean that CDOM is more aromatic and has higher molecular mass [ 37 ]. These circumstances favour sunlight absorption by CDOM (higher A CDOM values).…”

“…In environmental waters, CDOM photobleaching destroys chromophores (lower A o ) and causes molecular fragmentation (higher S ), thereby decreasing CDOM absorbance [ 34 , 37 ]. The steady-state [ 3 CDOM*] would be decreased as a consequence, while [ • OH] and [CO 3 •− ] would decrease when nitrate and nitrite are low (the main effect being the inhibition of CDOM photochemistry) or increase when nitrate and nitrite are high (the main effect being enhanced photochemistry of NO 3 − and NO 2 − , due to lower sunlight screening by CDOM).…”

“…Hence, simulations of methane fluxes from lakes throughout the region will require modifying parameter values and inputs from those used for Lake Janauacá. In addition to incorporation of data from field studies, remote sensing offers approaches for estimating chlorophyll, suspended sediment and dissolved organic matter concentrations, though the optically complex waters add analytical difficulty and uncertainty (Fassoni‐Andrade & Paiva, 2019; Novo et al., 2006; Sayers et al., 2015; Silva et al., 2019).…”
