Use of Panoramic Radiographs to Detect Signs of Osteoporosis in Edentulous

Abstract: Objective: The objective is to analyze the importance of panoramic and carpal radiographs for evaluation of edentulous individuals in different ages, demonstrating the contribution of different dental radiographic techniques in detecting patients with signs of osteoporosis. Methods: The study was developed using panoramic and carpal digital radiographs of 30 edentulous women (age ranged 50 -90 years). The panoramic radiographs was performed to measure the thickness of the mental index-MI and gonial index-GI, a… Show more

“…However, access to DXA examination is significantly limited in a number of countries . Fortunately, obtaining evidence of osteoporotic alterations is also possible by assessing radiomorphometric indices on panoramic radiographs, which are widely applied in dental clinical practice because of their low cost and wide availability. Among the radiomorphometric indices, the mandibular cortical index (MCI) is useful for screening postmenopausal women at risk of osteoporosis because it is inversely correlated with systemic BMD .…”

“…Furthermore, since gender and age-related changes are common to be seen in relation to the studied radiomorphometric indices, these indices may be used for their potential role in identifying subjects with low BMD as has been suggested in numerous other studies conducted, including the study conducted by Ramalli et al . [ 27 ] The present study, though, had its own limitations in the form of smaller sample size and inclusion of specific age ranges included, apart from the study being in a cross-sectional study design.…”
