This study conducted a field campaign to collect atmospheric deposition samples of heavy metals and arsenic, a metalloid element with typical chemical-physical characteristics (HMA), from 12 sampling sites and water samples from 37 rivers across the Bohai Sea (BS) and North Yellow Sea (NYS) in China. The HMA budgets in the BS and NYS were quantified by a budget model, which was developed based on the HMA inputs from atmospheric deposition and riverine discharge, sequestration to sediment, and interexchange among the BS's four subareas and the NYS. Statistical analyses of 76 deposition samples and 109 water concentration samples showed that atmospheric deposition was a main pathway of Pb entering the BS and NYS, whereas riverine discharge dominated the input of Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and As into the marine environment. Modeled results showed that the fractions of HMA in the water bodies compared with their total burdens were 86.6 ± 4.55% in the Liaodong Bay, 60.5 ± 10.5% in the Bohai Bay, 20.9 ± 9.05% in the Laizhou Bay, 95.1 ± 2.06% in the Central BS, and 94.3 ± 1.93% in the NYS. The lowest fraction of HMA in the Laizhou Bay was attributed to high sedimentation rates and higher suspended particulate matter concentrations due to inputs from the Yellow River. The modeled 1-, 10- and 100- year mass budgets indicated that the Liaodong Bay in the north of the BS was a sink of HMA, the Bohai Bay and Laizhou Bay in the west and south of the BS acted as sources, and the Central BS and NYS were a transition area for most HMA.

The construction of marine ecological security barriers (MESBs) is fundamental for the sustainable development of the marine ecological environment and of the marine economy, and is an important component of the strategy of land-sea integration. It is difficult to build an effective MESB simply by relying on the power of the government; therefore, to this respect, it is urgent to encourage the multiple participating subjects to work together. This study takes the Bohai Sea as the research object, and uses evolutionary game theory to construct a game model of decision-making behavior among marine enterprises, local governments, and the public in the process of construction of the MESB in the Bohai Sea, so as to explore the strategic stability equilibrium point through the analysis of the interests of the three decision makers, and lay the foundation for promoting this process. The results are as follows: (1) Local government regulation is key to promote the transformation of the Bohai Sea MESB from policy documents to behavior and from goal to practice; moreover, it directly influences whether the main sources of land-based pollution, i.e., marine enterprises, will abandon the traditional approach to production and development and actively promote the construction of the Bohai Sea MESB. (2) The supervision and reporting of the public can be used as a synergistic, auxiliary supervision means. Thanks to the government’s publicity and education, the public will develop social awareness of marine ecological security, which in turn will ensure a better public supervision of the behavior of local governments and, thus, promote the active participation of marine enterprises in the MESB in the Bohai Sea. (3) Participation costs, ecological benefits, corporate social image, fines, and other factors are the main factors considered in the strategic choice of marine enterprises, with different factors having different marginal effects at different stages. Finally, this study proposes effective measures to further clarify the roles and functions of the stakeholders in the construction of the MESB in the Bohai Sea, balance the interests of the game subjects, and provide an effective implementation path for the realization of the “Ocean Power”.

Addressing cumulative effects, maritime conflicts and ecosystem services threats through MSPoriented geospatial webtools. AbstractTo solve conservation and planning challenges in the marine environment, researchers are increasingly developing geospatial tools to address impacts of anthropogenic activities on marine biodiversity. The paper presents a comprehensive set of built-in geospatial webtools to support Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) and environmental management objectives implemented into the Tools4MSP interoperable GeoPlatform. The webtools include cumulative effects assessment (CEA), maritime use conflict (MUC) analysis, MSFD pressure-driven CEA and a CEA-based marine ecosystem service threat analysis (MES-Threat) . The tools are tested for the Northern Adriatic (NA) Sea, one of the most industrialized sea areas of Europe using a case study driven modelling strategy. Overall results show that coastal areas within 0-9 nm in the Gulf of Trieste, Grado-Marano and Venice lagoon and Po Delta outlet are subjected to intense cumulative effects and high sea use conflicts mainly from port activities, fishery, coastal and maritime tourism and maritime shipping. Linking MES into CEA provided novel information on locally threatened high MES supporting and provisioning habitats such Cymodocea beds and infralittoral fine sands, threats to cultural MES are most pronounced in coastal areas. Results are discussed for their geospatial relevance for regional planning, resource management and their applicability within MSP and environmental assessment. 45 50 55 60 65 70 75
