Abstract:Spectral-domain OCT is a useful tool in distinguishing RS from RD, eliminating previous diagnostic uncertainty. The Spectralis HRA and OCT device has the added advantages of being able to reliably image anterior retinal pathology and produce high-definition images.
“…These findings are in accordance with other studies that visualized senile retinoschisis or retinal detachment with the OCT. Compared with those studies, the major advantage of the SL SCAN-1 is the ability to scan all far peripheral lesions, anterior of the equator and to obtain OCT scans of the complete lesion (Ip et al 1999;Kamppeter & Jonas 2004;Landa et al 2010;Yeoh et al 2012).…”

“…2010). The Spectralis HRA allows to rotate the camera to maximize the angle, but can only image the superior and inferior peripheral fundus, and not the complete lesion (Yeoh et al. 2012).…”

“…With exception of the Spectralis HRA OCT (Heidelberg engineering), the lesion has to be located posterior of the equator, preferably near the posterior pole to be within reach (Ip et al 1999;Landa et al 2010). The Spectralis HRA allows to rotate the camera to maximize the angle, but can only image the superior and inferior peripheral fundus, and not the complete lesion (Yeoh et al 2012).…”

“…Retinal splitting was further distinguished using OCT scans as single or double splitting, as described in Yeoh et al. () The inner retinal layer was graded as normal‐structured retina, an atrophic inner leaf or cystoid degeneration.…”
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a reliable method to differentiate and monitor RS from naRD. Morphological characteristics, including ILB and OLB, could be accurately illustrated in RS.
“…Retinoschisis lacks retinal tears, vitreous pigment cells or a demarcation line seen in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. It blanches with laser due to reaction in the outer layer that remains in apposition to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)2 5 6 However, the laser test does not work uniformly 7. Due to irreversible interruptions of the neuronal pathway between the photoreceptors and the ganglion cells, an absolute visual field defect is seen on conventional and indirect ophthalmoscope perimetry.…”
The OCT morphology of outer retinal holes in conjunction with imaging of the posterior schisis cavity edge aids in the diagnosis of retinoschisis and schisis-detachment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
