“…Measurement of Uptake of 99Tcm by Thyroid.-The uptake of 99Tcm was determined by a method which is based on the use of scanning equipment and which is described in greater detail elsewhere (Williams et al, 1971). The dose of 99Tcm (0-5 mCi) was measured with the detectors of a dual head scanner and was then given intravenously.…”

“…The thyroid gland uptake can be measured using Tcggm, iodine-132 or iodine-131, and the 20 min uptake of Tcggm (Goolden et al, 1971 ; Van't Hoff et al, 1972) is the most rapid method of assessing thyroid function. High values are usually found in thyrotoxicosis, but may also occur in euthyroid or even hypothyroid patients with iodinedeficiency, dyshormonogenesis, autoimmune thyroiditis and following withdrawal of antithyroid drugs.…”

“…Since the original report by Andros and others (1965) a number of workers have described their experience with 99Tcm in the investigation of thyroid disorders (Atkins and Richards, 1968;de Garreta et al, 1968;Shimmins et al, 1968;Goolden et al, 1971;McGill, Harden, Robertson, and Shimmins, 1971;Hoschl and Gimlette, 1971;Hurleyet al, 1972;Van't Hoff et al, 1972). Published normal values for 99Tcm uptake are in good agreement with one another (table II).…”

“…1231 has physical characteristics which make it quite suitable in this respect but this isotope is not yet generally available. 99Tcm is satisfactory in most respects and has been recommended in preference to radioactive iodine for the routine assessment of thyroid function (Goolden, Glass, and Williams, 1971). This recommendation has been endorsed by the IAEA panel on thyroid radionucleide uptake measurements (International Atomic Energy Agency, 1972).…”
