Use of the Airtraq® device for airway management in the prehospital setting – a retrospective study

Abstract: BackgroundDifficulties with prehospital intubations have encouraged the development of indirect laryngoscopy techniques, facilitating laryngeal visualization. Airtraq® is a relatively new single-use indirect laryngoscope. The Airtraq® has been evaluated in several prehospital mannequin intubation trials. However, prehospital clinical experience with the device is limited.MethodsA retrospective medical chart review was performed for patients who underwent prehospital endotracheal intubation in the Stockholm Cou… Show more

“…Temperature measurement becomes increasingly useful in rural and wilderness areas with long transports and in mass casualty incidents when resources are limited. Unfortunately , T core is infrequently evaluated in the field, and many pre-hospital services do not have adequate equipment to accurately diagnose hypothermia [ 10 , 19 , 20 ]. Ideally, T core is measured in the distal third of the oesophagus [ 21 , 22 ], but requires the patient to be sedated or intubated.…”

“…Intubation is one of the most important procedures attributing prognosis in severely ill patients [ 1 ]. Endotracheal intubation success rates are variable depending on airway structure, patient's clinical status, practitioner's skills, and so forth [ 2 , 3 ]. The video laryngoscopes, recently and widely used, are good substitutes for conventional direct laryngoscope in difficult airway management [ 4 ].…”

“…1 A wider range of applications of Airtraq ® have been described in literature including difficult airway management, as a rescue device following failed direct laryngoscopy, awake tracheal intubation, airway management of patients with morbid obesity as well as those with unstable cervical spine, and airway management in pre-hospital setings. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Failed intubation using Airtraq ® may be encountered owing to difficulty or inability to manipulate the endotracheal tube (ETT) tip across the glottis. 9 Gum elastic bougie (GEB) can be used as a rescue device in such cases.…”
