Use of the male condom by heterosexual adolescents and young people: literature review

Abstract: Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable in relation to STIs. There is a need to ensure that accurate messages are delivered about safer sex and contraception to this very vulnerable group. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that romantic love comprises strong emotions that have a role in decision-making and options for reducing personal-health risk during sexual activity.

“…Specifically, for many of the young people in our study having a trusting relationship with one partner was their preferred strategy (Mooney-Somers et al 2009b). Previous research has highlighted the association between condoms and casual partners or condoms and new partners (East et al 2007) where continued use in longer-term partnerships or relationships where familiarity and trust has been built becomes problematic. Condom free sex signifies trust and abandoning condoms in a relationship becomes a symbolic marker of love and commitment (Hillier et al 1999;Kirkman et al 1998).…”

“…[32][33][34][35] Some qualitative research reports that condoms symbolize infidelity, disease status, and mistrust, which acts as a barrier to continued condom use in long-term and committed relationships. [36][37][38][39][40] Although condom use has not been found to explain racial disparities in HIV or STI prevalence, 41,42 it is still a crucial behavior change goal. African Americans living in high HIV prevalence areas would have to achieve a much higher level of condom use across all partnership types to halt the heterosexual HIV epidemic and diminish racial disparities.…”

“…Where research has been conducted amongst youths of both genders, it suggests that boys have some of the same concerns as girls such as visibility in accessing services and the need for confidentiality 17,18 , but also that boys have different approaches to responsibility for 4 contraception 16,19,20 . Other research 21,22 highlights the difficulties for both genders in negotiating condom use, and for young women in particular, the successful negotiation of safe sex is less likely when confounded by notions of romantic love 23 .…”
