Use of the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients in Determining Acute Care Discharge Recommendations

Abstract: Purpose/Hypothesis: Acute care therapists face many barriers that limit the use of screening tools including time constraints and lack of measures appropriate for use in this setting. The Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke patients (PASS) was developed to assess sitting, lying, and standing balance in persons who experienced a stroke. The StrokEDGE taskforce highly recommends the PASS for acute care, as it has excellent psychometric properties and clinical utility. This project used the PASS and … Show more

“…Several studies shown total PASS scores lower than 20 for stroke inpatients, some advisory reports calculated a mean score of 31.8 for home physical therapy, 32.6 for outpatient therapy and 34.9 for no therapy at discharge. [28][29][30] Our mean values for PASS calculated as 29.5 and 30 without and with corset which points almost a level of home discharge for stroke patients and there was no significant difference between two evaluations. Those high mean values were not altered significantly with the application and the reason might be the functionally high starting point of our stroke patients.…”

“…PASS is a practical test that is easy to apply and understand to assess postural control and balance in patients with low physical performance levels. They also showed that it could be used in determining the discharge recommendations in acute care (14) and in predicting ambulation levels (15). An and Lee ( 16) examined the validity and reliability of PASS in patients with chronic stroke, and found the intra-rater (ICC 3,1=0.97, 95% CI) and absolute (SEM=1.01) reliability, and BBS to be high.…”
