Feigned mental disorders arising from malingering or factitious disorders dramatically influence the clinical presentations of clients. The accurate assessment of feigning, therefore, is a critical issue in many psychological evaluations. Inaccurate determinations of feigning have far‐reaching consequences. When feigning is not detected, individuals can receive unwarranted benefits, avoid responsibilities, and utilize a disproportionate level of health care services. When feigning is misclassified, individuals with genuine mental disorders can suffer greatly by having benefits and services unfairly revoked. In some cases legal sanctions can also be imposed on these individuals.
