“…In the present study, although P. tricornutum was cultivated at a lower average light intensity of 9.58 mol m −2 d −1 , the average biomass productivity was similar to their results obtained at 20 mol m −2 d −1 (158.47 mg L −1 d −1 at 0.4 g L −1 , and 98.14 mg L −1 d −1 at 1.1 g L −1 ; Table 1). Moreover, lower biomass productivities (29–79 mg L −1 d −1 ) were reported when cultivated in 270 vertical prototype‐outdoor column PBRs (270 L, column height 220 cm, diameter 55 cm), at semi‐continuous mode in January and February in Italy (Simonazzi et al, 2019). Higher biomass productivity, 1400 mg L −1 d −1 , was achieved in southern latitudes in Spain, with higher mean daily irradiance (1100 μmol m −2 s −1 ; Acién Fernández et al, 2003).…”

“…To our knowledge, this is the first successful attempt of high-density cultivation. Previous studies at this scale conducted cultivation at a much lower density (i.e., dry weight below 1 g L −1 ) (Fernandes et al, 2020;Hajar et al, 2017;Simonazzi et al, 2019). The productivity of the cultures (0.8 and 0.93 g L −1 d −1 ), approached a maximum expectation of 1 g L −1 d −1 , as defined by the daily supply of PLD and nutrients.…”

“…Fish oil (FO) has a high content of DHA and EPA mainly esterified to triacylglycerols, while these fatty acids are mainly esterified to phospholipids in krill oil (KO) extracted from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) 9,10) . In addition, KO also contains astaxanthin, which is a potent antioxidant that might enhance the stability of n-3 LCPUFAs in the oil and thereby yield lipid content, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (P. tricornutum) is rich in Fx and n-3 LCPUFAs, particularly EPA 17,18) . In P. tricornutum, Fx level is at least 10 times higher than that in macroalga 19) .…”
