Use of Zirconia Ceramic in the DexAide Right Ventricular Assist Device Journal Bearing

Abstract: Our aim was to evaluate the potential use of zirconium oxide (zirconia) as a blood journal bearing material in the DexAide right ventricular assist device. The DexAide titanium stator was replaced by a zirconia stator in several blood pump builds, without changing the remaining pump hardware components. In vitro pump performance and efficiency were evaluated at a predetermined pump speed and flow. Motor power consumption decreased by 20%, and DexAide battery life was extended to over 12 h on two fully charged … Show more

“…There was a statistically significant difference in the motor consumption between the DexAide RVAD experiments with zirconia stators and prior DexAide experiments with titanium stators ( P < 0.001). We have reported previously the material properties of zirconia that makes it a suitable material for blood pumps and shown in our in vitro development efforts that the new DexAide RVAD zirconia stator extended battery life by 3 h and 20 min to over 12 h (4).…”

“…Subsequent i n vitro 96 and 14 to 91-day experiments 99 demonstrated that the new zirconia ceramic stator reduced power consumption by 20% with similar hemodynamic performance to the original cast-titanium stator. No biological deposition was observed on the new stator, which suggests that zirconia ceramic may be a useful material in the journal bearings of novel LVADs.…”

“…The DexAide contains a cast-titanium volute housing (44 × 48 mm, 69 ml volume displacement, 280 g), a rotating magnetic ring with impeller veins, and a zirconia (zirconium oxide) ceramic stator 96 (Figure 2, Right). The rotating assembly spins around the stator post suspended in the axial direction by magnetic forces and in the radial direction by a blood lubricated film 97 .…”

“…5,6 Circulatory assist devices are rapidly becoming a viable therapeutic option for end-stage heart failure and are being increasingly used in elderly patients. 7 Even with the reported significant improvements in the new continuous-flow ventricular assist devices over their pulsatile predecessors, thromboembolism and bleeding associated with anticoagulation use remain two of the major complications associated with these devices.…”
