Usefulness of Combining Clinical and Radiological Dental Findings for a More Accurate Noninvasive Age Estimation

Abstract: The aim of this study was to establish correlations of clinical and radiological dental findings, alone or in combination, with chronological age in adults. Dental findings and orthopantomograms of 984 patients (aged 20-60 years; 524 females/460 males) were analyzed. DMF-T index and distance (alveolar bone level, ABL) between cemento-enamel junction and alveolar bone margin were recorded. Additionally, clinical and radiological findings at each tooth crown and root were collected according to the actual status… Show more

“…In living individuals, judicial challenges must be solved when valid identification documents are lacking [2, 3]. While cementum or dentine can be studied in dead bodies, the focus for the living is on the clinical situation and radiographs [4]. Root development, periodontium, ratio between pulp and tooth or tooth and root of permanent teeth can be measured radiologically.…”

“…In the literature, discrepancies of many years, sometimes even decades, between assumed and true age have been reported. In a study combining the clinical and radiological dental status of patients, deviations of 14 to 17 years in men, and 12 to 15 years in women to the chronological age were reported [37]. In a study by Olze [51], the combination of the DMFT indices of all permanent teeth, the DMFT indices of the third molars, the eruption time of the third molars and the degree of periodontal destruction around the second molars only yielded correct age values for 69.7% of the men and 71.4% of the women.…”

“…From a forensic perspective, sufficiently precise and reliable determination of age is required. There is an increasing demand by the courts for appropriate estimation of age in living individuals, suspected of being minors in the absence of legal documentation of age in criminal cases, adoptions, asylum‐seekers, refugees, and immigrants (3, 4). Various methods have been used to estimate age for medico‐legal purposes, but the radiological evaluation of dental age is considered as the most accurate method.…”
