Usefulness of Goal Attainment Scaling in Intensive Stroke Rehabilitation During the Subacute Stage

Abstract: Objective To investigate the usefulness of goal attainment scaling (GAS) in intensive stroke rehabilitation during the subacute stage. Methods Medical records of subacute post-stroke patients who had undergone intensive rehabilitation under hospitalization, before and after the application of GAS, were collected. GAS was conducted at the initial evaluation of each patient. Specific goals were suggested by physical and occupational therapists and were determined by the responsible physiatrist. “…Personal goals regarding rehabilitation/training will be assessed with the Goal Attainment Scale (GAS) . The GAS is an individual approach to defining and evaluating personal rehabilitation goals ( 35 , 36 ). The goals will be defined at the beginning of the intervention and will be reevaluated in the middle (after 8 trainings) and at the end of the intervention period.…”

“…As previously shown in a literature review [7], the impact on patients' overall gait is very di cult to quantify clinicall, making it di cult to establish a standardized method for evaluating the e cacy of SEVF surgery after stroke. Most of the scales lack speci city, and the most promising option appears to be the Goal Attainment Scale [5,9,39,40]. GAS shows good sensitivity and speci city for assessing the functional impact of a treatment.…”

“…While physical therapy targets gross motor recovery, occupational therapy aims to enhance various cognitive abilities, facilitates the use of disabled upper extremities, and promotes independent ADL. Although an individualized therapeutic approach was applied to each patient, the overall framework was based on the standardized protocol of the trained rehabilitation team of the university hospital (28). And occupational therapy was implemented as soon as rTMS was finished (in a 10 mins), with the exception of a few due to urgent events.…”
