“…The authors showed that a silent mutant for the biosynthesis of ergosterol of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ERG4-) was unable to grow in the presence of medium and long chain fatty acids. Similarly, [58] reported an increased activity of cis-9-heptadecenoic acid against Phytophthora infestans, P. aphanidermatum and B. cinerea, pathogens characterized by a low or zero membrane sterol content.…”

“…The results showed that a FAm mixture at concentrations of 2 and 4% inhibited the growth of the tested phytopathogens, with an effect comparable to commercial fungicides. There are several fatty acids already known for their antifungal activity [41,57,58]. As reported by [57], some of them, such as butyric, caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic, and linoleic acids, are able to inhibit the growth and development of phytopathogenic fungi as Alternaria solani, Colletotrichum lagenarium, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.…”

“…In P. flocculosa , random mutations were accomplished by insertional mutagenesis and screened for their antagonistic properties (Cheng et al , 2003). Recently, development of the gene expression vectors and the procedure for transformation in the genus Pseudozyma were reported (Morita et al , 2007a; Avis et al , 2005, 2008; Cheng et al , 2008). Further genetic study of the genus Pseudozyma should enable us not only to understand the biological function of MELs but also to facilitate the practical use of the glycolipids on an industrial scale.…”

“…Recently, an EST (expressed sequence tag) analysis was attempted with P. antarctica grown in a medium containing soybean oil, and the genes expressed during MEL production were tentatively categorized on the basis of putative function, although the details of each gene are almost unknown [47]. The tools for genetic engineering of the yeast – the construction of the expression vector carrying efficient promoters and a simple transformation method by electroporation in Pseudozyma yeast – were also developed in the past few years [48–50].…”
