Usefulness of Intracoronary Angioscopy for Elucidating the Cause of Subacute Thrombosis After Stenting

Abstract: Stent thrombosis is rare with anti-platelet therapy, which consists of aspirin and ticlopidine as a post-stenting administration. A 77-year-old man had repeated stent thrombosis, which was not predicted by coronary angiography, despite using contemporary periprocedural anti-platelet therapy. Only intravascular fiberscopy was able to detect the cause of the stent thrombosis. (Jpn Circ J 2001; 65: 232 -235)

“…In addition, this patient did not have risk factors of the development of ST such as diabetes, old age, low ejection fraction, moderate or heavy calcification, and postprocedural TIMI flow b3 [6]. According to cases reported recently, it has been shown by intra vascular fibro-angioscopy that the cause of ST was elucidated to be the partial protrusion of the stent-struts into the lumen [7]. As far as we know, our case was the first case of subacute ST for the same time confirmed by coronary angiography at Cypher stents in the LAD and LCx.…”
