Usefulness of serum procalcitonin as a diagnostic biomarker of infection in children with chronic kidney disease

Abstract: IntroductionSerum procalcitonin (PCT) levels are known to be low in healthy individuals in healthy subjects but are increased in patients with a severe bacterial infection. It has not been extensively studied in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), treated either with hemodialysis (HD) or with renal transplantation.Material and methodsDuring a 6-month period, blood samples were taken from 102 (55 HD children and 47 renal transplant recipients) children with a strong clinical suspicion of infection. Proc… Show more

“…Procalcitonin (proCT) is an acute phase protein consisting of 116 amino acids and is the precursor of the hormone calcitonin [11]. It has gained acceptance in obstetric practice since it was shown to rise at 3 to 6 h following bacterial infections and is a sensitive biomarker that differentiates bacterial infections from non-bacterial ones and other inflammatory states [12]. In this study we aimed to determine whether maternal serum proCT levels are useful in the prediction of chorioamnionitis in patients with PPROM.…”

“…In our study, the PCT had not good results in comparison to culture results, but better results were seen when compared by SIRS. In the study by Fadel et al (35) among 102 patients of CKD with 34 culture positive cases showed sensitivity and specificity of 94% and 88% for PCT with a cut of point of 0.5, respectively. These results were low in our study compared to the culture results, but improved by SIRS.…”
