Usefulness of Ultrasound-Computer-Craniocorpography in Unilateral Ménière’s Disease

Abstract: Background: Ménière’s disease (MD) is composed of a set of fluctuating symptoms, whereby vertigo is the most unpleasant among them and often accompanied by deterioration of the balance system. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to objectively assess the Romberg and Unterberger-Fukuda tests by ultrasound-computer-craniocorpography (US-COMP-CCG) in patients suffering from MD and to characterize the balance disorders in different frames of MD. Methods: This is a case-control study where 51 patients with nor… Show more

“…Standing test is evaluated by the longitudinal and lateral sway in cm, the torticollis angle in degrees, and the forehead covering area in cm 2 . Whereas, stepping test is evaluated by the longitudinal deviation and lateral sway width in cm, the angular deviation and the self-spin in degrees ( Maihoub et al., 2019 ). The longitudinal sway as well as longitudinal deviation calculates the sway of the patient from front to back, where a sway of more than 10 cm is considered as abnormal.…”

“…These disturbances can be measured based on the vestibulospinal reflex ( Schniepp et al., 2019 ), using for example the craniocorpography ( Gomez-Angel et al., 2000 ) or posturography ( Falls, 2019 ). Ultrasound-computer-craniocorpography (US-COMP-CCG) is applicable for the objective examination of the vestibulospinal reflex, whereas it analyses the head and body movements under the strain of different test profiles applying the standing test (Romberg) and the stepping test (Unterberger-Fukuda) ( Maihoub et al., 2019 ). Therefore, thorough spherical evaluation of central dizziness can add up to our understanding on the function of the central vestibular system to assure our daily activities.…”

“…Az előbbi esetén a vizsgálati alany egyenesen, lábait összezárva, karjait előrenyújtva áll egy percig. Az utóbbinál a beteget ugyanebbe a pozícióba helyezzük, azonban egy percig tartó helyben járásra szólítjuk fel [17,18]. A számítógép radarsémában rögzíti a beteg mozgását (2. ábra), és ebből a szoftver megadja a numerikus paramétereket.…”

“…Vertigo is described as the most unpleasant of the other symptoms commonly associated with MD. 17 It can be incapacitating in the patients' usual occupational, social, and home activities, consequently impairing their quality of life. 18 According to the Brazilian Society of Otorhinolaryngology, topographic and etiologic diagnosis is the greatest challenge in patients with vertigo.…”
