BackgroundPain management is a critical but complex issue for the relief of acute pain, particularly for postoperative pain and severe pain in cancer patients. It also plays important roles in promoting quality of care. The introduction of pain management decision support systems (PM-DSS) is considered a potential solution for addressing the complex problems encountered in pain management. This study aims to investigate factors affecting acceptance of PM-DSS from a nurse anesthetist perspective.MethodsA questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data from nurse anesthetists in a case hospital. A total of 113 questionnaires were distributed, and 101 complete copies were returned, indicating a valid response rate of 89.3%. Collected data were analyzed by structure equation modeling using the partial least square tool.ResultsThe results show that perceived information quality (γ=.451, p<.001), computer self-efficacy (γ=.315, p<.01), and organizational structure (γ=.210, p<.05), both significantly impact nurse anesthetists’ perceived usefulness of PM-DSS. Information quality (γ=.267, p<.05) significantly impacts nurse anesthetists’ perceptions of PM-DSS ease of use. Furthermore, both perceived ease of use (β=.436, p<.001, R2=.487) and perceived usefulness (β=.443, p<.001, R2=.646) significantly affected nurse anesthetists’ PM-DSS acceptance (R2=.640). Thus, the critical role of information quality in the development of clinical decision support system is demonstrated.ConclusionsThe findings of this study enable hospital managers to understand the important considerations for nurse anesthetists in accepting PM-DSS, particularly for the issues related to the improvement of information quality, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the system. In addition, the results also provide useful suggestions for designers and implementers of PM-DSS in improving system development.

Picture archiving and communication system know as (PACS) is a rapidly growing technology in the healthcare industry in Malaysia and provides a positive development for patient services and one of the factors that influence the success of this system is the level of user acceptance. However, the acceptance level of the radiographers in using PACS and also the factors influencing its usage are unknown. Thus, this study seeks to determine the factors that influence the radiographers on the acceptance of PACS in their daily tasks. A study was conducted in three hospitals to determine the level of acceptance of radiographers in the implementation of PACS and factors influenced it. A questionnaire applying the theory of 'Technology Acceptance Model' which uses components of perceived of usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU) to determine the acceptance level of radiographers to PACS was used to collect data. Quantitative approach is adopted with questionnaire has been distributed to 76 radiographers at Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya and Hospital Serdang. Result analysis of stepwise multiple regression found that PEU was found an important influencing factor in determining the acceptance level of radiographers (R 2 = 0.077) where this construct has resulted in radiographers do not feel overburdened in completing their duties. This study reported that radiographers are more interested in completing their job on ease of use while usefulness of the PACS system was not a main influence. Therefore, it is important for organizations which want to implement PACS to create an overview about PACS to the radiographers. The training should be given before the execution of system to enable acknowledgement of the advantages offered by PACS.

Furthermore, Aldosari (2012) in his study about the acceptance of PACS within a healthcare institution in Saudi Arabia suggested that vendor support could influence the acceptance of such technologies since there are multiple suppliers for those HIS systems with each supplier having its own policy; the researcher also suggested to include this factor in future studies. Healthcare information systems (HIS) are an important part of nowadays hospitals as it provides valuable benefits and functionalities for healthcare provision. However, the implementation and adoption of these complex innovations is a challenging task as documented by the literature; therefore, careful planning and consideration to all important factors that influence the adoption process by healthcare staff is required. Governmental reports stated that the usage of HIS systems within public hospitals of Iraq is still low and problematic; that's why the current study aims at empirically investigating the opinions of healthcare staff regarding the adoption of HIS within public hospitals of Iraq. The current study extended the UTAUT model by integrating additional organizational and environmental factors and for that purpose a questionnaire was developed for obtaining the healthcare staff's opinions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first empirical study that utilized the UTAUT model to tackle the topic of HIS adoption in Iraq public healthcare sector. The study was able to explain 33% and 46% of the variance within the behavioral intention and the usage of HIS, respectively. The practical findings of this quantitative study can be helpful for healthcare officials to address the actual challenges related to HIS adoption and to set proper strategies for implementing futuristic HIS projects.
