User Experience for Model-Driven Engineering: Challenges and Future Directions

Abstract: Abstract-Since its infancy, Model Driven Engineering (MDE) research has primarily focused on technical issues. Although it is becoming increasingly common for MDE research papers to evaluate their theoretical and practical solutions, extensive usability studies are still uncommon. We observe a scarcity of User eXperience (UX)-related research in the MDE community, and posit that many existing tools and languages have much room for improvement with respect to UX. Industrial feedback indicates that UX is an impo… Show more

“…Therefore, the primary goal for usability engineers is to design a system that people find usable and will use (Ovaska, 1991). Despite the fact that the term of usability is widely in use, there is no agreement on a final definition (Paige et al, 2017). Different opinions regarding the ways to measure usability, together with the different approaches, generated many similar definitions in the field (Folmer and Bosch, 2004).…”

“…Initially, usability definition focussed on the outcome of interaction rather than the quality of the product with which the user is interacting. In the later standards (ISO/IEC 9241-210; ISO/IEC 9241-210), however, the term usability has a twofold definition; as the quality of the product and the outcome of interaction related to its quality in use (Paige et al, 2017). According to Bruno and Al-Qaimari (2004), usability consists of four common factors that have an impact on the whole interactive system: the user, the technology, the task, and the context of use.…”

“…While the SE community has recently made efforts to narrow the gap between SE and HCI [1] (e.g., by addressing the challenges of creating usable programming IDEs [20]), the MDE community has focused more on understanding the obstacles to MDE's adoption caused by factors other than tools (e.g., social, organizational, cost, etc.) [17] [30][42] [47].…”

“…These works propose useful features to reduce the effort of developing models, but never assess the effectiveness of their solutions on users. As such, it is unknown whether their features have difficult-to-use user interfaces (UIs) for MDE tools, which is a barrier to MDE adoption [1] [32].…”

“…A UX oferece um escopo mais rico em que as emoções, afetos, motivações e valores do usuário são dados tanto, senão mais, atenção do que facilidade de uso, facilidade de aprendizagem e satisfação básica subjetiva. A UX representa uma mudança para "experiência", focando também em qualidades hedônicas (capacidade de um produto em promover estimulação e identificação) e emoções positivas e de afeto que as pessoas experimentam ao interagir com produtos ou serviços (ABRANHÃO, et al, 2017).…”
