Abstract. The RESRAD-OFFSITE code provides expanded state-of-the art, cost-effective, and userfriendly methods for evaluating the radiological consequences to a receptor located onsite or outside the area of primary contamination. It calculates radiological dose and excess lifetime cancer risk with the predicted radionuclide concentrations in the environment, and derives soil cleanup guidelines corresponding to a specified dose limit. The RESRAD-OFFSITE code is an extension of the RESRAD (onsite) code, which has been widely used for calculating doses and risks from exposure to radioactively contaminated soils. The development of RESRAD-OFFSITE started more than 10 years ago, but new models and methodologies have been developed, tested, and incorporated since then. Some of the new models have been benchmarked against other independently developed (international) models. The databases used have also expanded to include all the radionuclides (more than 830) contained in the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) 38 database. Detailed information on the design and application of the RESRAD-OFFSITE code is presented in its recently published User's Manual.

Abstract:In September 1987 an accident occurred with a cesium chloride (CsCl) teletherapy source taken from a cancer therapy institute in Goiânia, Brazil. Misuse of the abandoned source caused widespread contamination of radioactive material (about 50 TBq of 137 Cs) in the town of Goiânia. Decontamination of affected areas did lead to about 3,500 m 3 of solid radioactive wastes, which were disposed in two near-surface repositories built in concrete in 1995. This paper documents a safety assessment of one of the low-level radioactive waste deposits containing 137 Cs over a time period of 600 years. Using HYDRUS-1D, we first obtained estimates of water infiltrating through the soil cover on top of the repository into and through the waste and its concrete liners and the underlying vadose zone towards groundwater. Calculations accounted for local precipitation and evapotranspiration rates, including root water uptake by the grass cover, as well as for the effects of concrete degradation on the hydraulic properties of the concrete liners. We next simulated long-term water fluxes and 137 Cs transport from the repository towards groundwater. Simulations accounted for the effects of 137 Cs sorption and radioactive decay on radionuclide transport from the waste to groundwater, thus permitting an evaluation of potential consequences to the environment and long-term exposure to the public. Consistent with previous assessments, our calculations indicate that very little if any radioactive material will reach the water table during the lifespan of the repository, also when accounting for preferential flow through the waste.

A detailed environmental impact assessment is required in many countries when considering the disposal of wastes containing radioactive materials. In this paper we present hybrid numerical-analytical solutions for the subsurface transport of radioactive contaminant decay chains that may be used for such an assessment. The model involves the advective-dispersive transport of multiple radionuclide species within separate but coupled saturated and unsaturated soil domains. The resulting partial differential equations were solved using the Generalized Integral Transform Technique to yield analytical expressions for the concentration distributions versus distance, and analytical or numerical solutions as a function of time. The potential of the hybrid modeling approach is illustrated by means of an environmental impact assessment of an uranium milling liquid waste pond near Caetite ´, Brazil. Calculated radionuclide concentration distributions were for this purpose used in subsequent radiation dose calculations. Several scenarios were analyzed, including operational, human intrusion, farmer/road builder, and leaching scenarios. Numerical results show that for all scenarios analyzed the total dose is less than the Brazilian regulatory dose limit of 0.3 mSv/year above natural background for a period of 10,000 years.
