User Survey of 3 Ankle Braces in Soccer, Volleyball, and Running: Which Brace Fits Best?

Abstract: All 3 ankle-brace types scored high on perceived ease of use and quality. Regarding the brace types, soccer players, volleyball players, and runners differed in their assessments of subjective evaluation of comfort, stability, hindrance, overall satisfaction, and willingness to buy the brace. Soccer players and runners preferred the CB, whereas volleyball players preferred the LB.

“…Previous researchers have shown that lateral ligament complex tears are common in this group. 16 Although some ankle injury prevention strategies have shown promising results, [17][18][19][20][21] athlete behavior and preferences are important considerations in the development of such strategies; 22 and it may be critical to further prioritize the primary prevention of such injuries in this group considering the incidence trajectories observed here. Similarly, concussions rates also sharply increased during 2015-2016 to 2018-2019.…”

“…Some scholars acknowledged that elastic deformation of the support structure on both sides of the ankle brace provided an eversion moment to overcome inversion and reduced the work [31]. Based on Janssen et al's [7] Constructs of Subjective Factors of Brace Use, the questionnaires were designed using the Likert 5 point scale for each evaluation index, including ease of use, quality, comfort, stability, hindrance, and satisfaction. In general, the CPAB score was considered superior to the other two braces.…”

“…According to the application method and appearance design, available ankle braces are mainly divided into three categories: fixed slip-on, bandage winding, and bandage slip-on. Moreover, they can also be divided into the external types, internal type, and internal and external dual-use type [7]. The inconvenient external ankle brace is generally made of rigid polyethylene material, which is bulky and uncomfortable.…”

“…For instance, the designs of ankle braces have continued to advance, with lighter, semirigid materials that improve comfort and provide multiplane stability. 18,81 Technological advances have also facilitated the implementation of exercise programs via the Internet and smartphone apps. These technologies have made it easier to educate coaches, athletes, and staff regarding preventive exercises, providing cueing for proper and improper techniques, and progression options.…”
