Using 3D Virtual Models for Real-Time Operations: A Practical Case Study

With the emergence of industry 4.0, the oil and gas (O&G) industry is now considering a range of digital technologies to enhance productivity, efficiency, and safety of their operations while minimizing capital and operating costs, health and environment risks, and variability in the O&G project life cycles. The deployment of emerging technologies allows O&G companies to construct digital twins (DT) of their assets. Considering DT adoption, the O&G industry is still at an early stage with implementations limited to isolated and selective applications instead of industry-wide implementation, limiting the benefits from DT implementation. To gain the full potential of DT and related technological adoption, a comprehensive understanding of DT technology, the current status of O&G-related DT research activities, and the opportunities and challenges associated with the deployment of DT in the O&G industry are of paramount importance. In order to develop this understanding, this paper presents a literature review of DT within the context of the O&G industry. The paper follows a systematic approach to select articles for the literature review. First, a keywords-based publication search was performed on the scientific databases such as Elsevier, IEEE Xplore, OnePetro, Scopus, and Springer. The filtered articles were then analyzed using online text analytic software (Voyant Tools) followed by a manual review of the abstract, introduction and conclusion sections to select the most relevant articles for our study. These articles and the industrial publications cited by them were thoroughly reviewed to present a comprehensive overview of DT technology and to identify current research status, opportunities and challenges of DT deployment in the O&G industry. From this literature review, it was found that asset integrity monitoring, project planning, and life cycle management are the key application areas of digital twin in the O&G industry while cyber security, lack of standardization, and uncertainty in scope and focus are the key challenges of DT deployment in the O&G industry. Chevron's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) Business Unit (BU) is a mature, heavy oil, thermally enhanced asset consisting of large fields that have been producing for over a century. To ensure continuing technology transformation, in 2003 San Joaquin Valley started its own i-field program being among the first BUs to pursue Chevron's enterprise-wide effort in building the Digital Oil Field of the Future. From its initiation, the program has been focusing on creating solutions to manage and optimize operations and enhance recovery. The paper showcases one of the most technologically advanced i-field heavy oil solutions implemented in San Joaquin Valley thermal assets, involving a high accuracy tiltmeter program implemented by a partner service company to advance the understanding of diatomite operations and monitor the surface ground movement In 2008, Chevron's SJV i-field team partnered with its Information Technology (IT) department to develop a state-of-the-art application called Integrated Diatomite Operations Tool (i-DOT). The product incorporated current field workflows for mapping the grid deformation with business data (well locations and status, steam volumes and dates, etc.) in relevant time. This was accomplished by establishing a live connection between Chevron and partner service company servers whereby terabytes of grid data would flow seamlessly into Chevron's SJV servers. Data acquisition, data processing and storage efforts were accomplished through an integrated effort between IT, GIS and PetroWeb development teams. Workflows were built through close collaboration between i-field engineers, petroleum engineers, earth ecientists, IT professionals and the operations group. The i-DOT solution has become the single point of operation monitoring and activity scheduling for multiple groups such as Operations, Asset Development and the Drilling team. The benefits of implementing i-DOT solutions are significant and transformed our decision making process in diatomite fields. The paper includes not only value creation but also lessons learned during development, deployment and end-user acceptance.
