Since becoming the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy (JGPT) in 2018, I have conducted initial editorial reviews on approximately 1800 submitted manuscripts. At the initial stage, primary concerns are whether the science is sufficiently rigorous, and if the findings have potential positive clinical impact. Assessment of scientific rigor considers the study design in relation to the research question(s), and the study conduct in relation to well-established recommended research practices. The degree to which a study is well-designed and properly conducted, including the statistical analyses and interpretation of results, is directly related to whether or not the results and conclusions are likely valid and can be trusted. The ability to trust study findings is especially crucial in intervention studies, which inform clinical patient management decisions.
