Using a Common Model: Mapping VRA Core 4.0 Into an RDF Ontology

Abstract: Linked Data has become a very important way to share information on the Web. The Visual Resource Association (VRA) Core 4 eXtensible Markup Language (XML) schema was used as a basis for developing a new VRA ontology that was highly interoperable across the Web. Once the model was developed, an eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) style sheet was created to test the model against an actual VRA Core 4 data set. The study successfully demonstrated how popular and widely consumed vocabularies can b… Show more

“…Note that we asked the help of professional librarians who are specialists in the preservation of fabric because each ancient fabric was more than fifty years old and can easily be damaged or torn. In order to be easily retrieved, we selected the VRA core metadata [30] to describe the fabric. The process of digitization of the fabric is shown in Figure 3.…”

“…Besides ontologies related to BIM, terminology from other web ontologies can be used to enrich both 2D and 3D building content. Image annotation for instance can be done using the LIO [38], VRA [39], IMGpedia [40], Arpenteur ontologies [41] and/or ontologies based on MPEG-7 [42]. Each of these vocabularies have a different focus i.e.…”

“…26 Using the VRA Data Standards Committee Guidelines to ensure all minimum fields were included, 27 Mixter mapped VRA XML elements and attributes to schema.org, FOAF, VoID, and DC Terms ontologies. This process is known as "cherry-picking," or combining various ontologies that already exist to represent properties or relationships (the predicates in RDF statements) as RDF instead of creating new proprietary RDF properties.…”
