Using a computerised database (REDCap) to monitor influenza vaccination coverage of healthcare workers and staff in South Eastern Sydney Local Health District

Abstract: ObjectiveNew South Wales (NSW) experienced a severe influenza season in 2017. In 2018, NSW Health implemented a campaign to improve healthcare worker (HCW) influenza vaccination coverage. The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (LHD) trialled a centralised online database to monitor HCW uptake of the vaccination. This paper outlines how the monitoring system was chosen and developed, the process of implementation and the effectiveness of the system in this setting. MethodsA literature review was conduct… Show more

“…Participants were enrolled between 15 March and 27 May 2021. Recruitment of participants and study data were collected concurrently either through hard copy questionnaires handed to the healthcare facilities, or using an online form on Research Electronic Data Capture software tools (REDCap; Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA) [ 46 , 47 , 48 ] hosted at the University of Cape Town server and sent through a link to HCWs’ e-mails or WhatsApp chat groups. After being completed electronically, data were directly captured and stored on REDCap.…”

“…A mechanism is needed to ensure that immunisations requiring regular updates have automatic flagging systems in place to inform a university and student when their immunisations need updating, such as the yearly recommendation for influenza vaccination. An online platform would be best suited to this, and a trial of such a program has been successfully used to monitor influenza vaccination coverage of healthcare workers in a Sydney local health district 33 …”

“…The REDCap platform is intended to support clinical research [7]. Utilization of REDCap has grown substantially in epidemiology, especially in studies of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. The major advantages of using the REDCap software are long-term reduction of research costs, the possibility of utilization on both smart devices and desktop computers, and rapid data entry, review, and analysis [6].…”
