Using a system dynamics approach for identifying and removing management model inadequacy

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to discuss how system dynamics (SD) modeling can help in cases where the management models used by an organization are not adequate for the task at hand. Design/methodology/approach -Two specific cases of management model inadequacy are discussed in this paper -namely management model obsolescence and management model inappropriateness. Each of the two cases is being demonstrated with the use of a specific practical case study. SD simulation models have been constructed ba… Show more

“…A system is defined as "a set of parts in interaction which satisfy a certain objective" (Tarride, 2006). Besides, system dynamics modeling helps in bridging organizational hindrances to their change, if the change is required (Ambroz and Derencin, 2010).…”

“…We propose the use of system archetypes as a tool for "looking inside the black box" and understanding the system elements, structure and behavior. So far archetype models have been used in analyzing sustainable development of resource management in the tourism sector (Ambroz and Derencin, 2010;Graham, 2000;Briassoulis, 2002;Kunc, 2012). However, there is no systematic analysis of the system archetypes use by tourism business organizations' with the goal to increase SR awareness and initiatives.…”

“…Although not widely adopted as theory and practice in management and strategy [ 47 ], these models have proved successful in helping to avoid policy resistance and in identifying high-leverage policies for sustained improvement [ 55 ] as well as improving outcomes and learning within and about the system [ 54 , 59 , 60 ]. Incorporating ideas from complexity science, system dynamic modelling and human behaviour have been shown to achieve better outcomes in a range of fields [ 46 ].…”
