Using Behavior Sequence Analysis to Map Serial Killers’ Life Histories

Abstract: The aim of the current research was to provide a novel method for mapping the developmental sequences of serial killers' life histories. An in-depth biographical account of serial killers' lives, from birth through to conviction, was gained and analyzed using Behavior Sequence Analysis. The analyses highlight similarities in behavioral events across the serial killers' lives, indicating not only which risk factors occur, but the temporal order of these factors. Results focused on early childhood environment, i… Show more

“…Among the most studied and understood involves the developmental sequences of these offender's life histories. Among the most distinct factors are early childhood trauma and parental abuse (Keatley, Golightly, & Shephard, 2018). “…Within temporal analyses, there are a number of techniques for analysing the progression of behaviours and events across time. For investigative purposes, this allows academics to analyse either life histories of potential suspects or victims (Keatley, Golightly, Shephard, Yaksic and Reid, 2018), or crime-scene-specific behaviours (Fossi et al, 2005;Keatley et al, 2017;Lawrence et al, 2010). The scale may change, but the directions or methods remain the same.…”

“…Behavioural and verbal sequences were analysed to show the typical progression or chains that occurred in these cases. Also, Keatley, Marono and Clarke (2018), and Keatley, Golightly, Shephard, Yaksic and Reid (2018) have conducted research on the life history of serial killers, including sexual homicides. Keatley et al showed the life histories of various serial killers, which can be used to begin to build a "profile" of the type of killer that may be responsible for crimes like the ones observed in a cold case.…”
