Using bookmarks: An approach to support ethical decision making in play therapy.

Abstract: Play therapy can be an effective intervention mode with children and families in counseling. As with any counseling intervention, ethical issues arise. This article examines 7 common ethical issues found in counseling that are particularly relevant to play therapy, presents a bookmark as a way to succinctly identify a decision-making model, and then applies the information to a hypothetical case.

“…This category had the least number of articles ( n = 4) out of the seven categories. Two articles focused on ethical decision-making (Carnes-Holt, Maddox, Warren, Morgan, & Zakaria, 2016; Ware & Dillman Taylor, 2014), one article focused on Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA; Letzring & Snow, 2011), and one article focused on values exploration for play therapists (Oden & Johnson, 2010). All of the articles under the Ethics category were nonresearch and only the article by Oden and Johnson (2010) was related to multiculturalism.…”

“…School counselors often face ethical challenges in their work due to their unique role as both educator and mental health professional. These challenges can include uncertainties such as (a) conflicting expectations and needs, (b) addressing professional competence, (c) maintaining confidentiality while adhering to school policy, (d) respecting the rights of parents/guardians, balancing ethical codes with conflicting legal requirements, and (e) addressing school policies and community standards that differ from one’s own ethics and professional ethical standards (Calley, 2009; Carnes-Holt et al, 2016; Flynn & Black, 2011; Guterman & Rudes, 2008). Competence to navigate these challenges develops over time and often involves self-reflection, increasing self-awareness, dialogue with peers, and education (Carnes-Holt et al, 2016).…”

“…Although self-care is a crucial component of helping professionals' well-being, it is insufficient to protect them from occupational risks. However, lack of self-care has been linked to unsatisfactory service quality which can be detrimental to both our clients and ourselves (4,5,43,44,46). Helping professionals tend to prioritize their clients' emotional support over their own, neglecting self-care activities that would lead to burnout (45) and consequentially the quality of service provided.…”
