Using Composition Trees to Validate an Entry Profile of Software Engineering Lifecycle Profiles for Very Small Entities (VSEs)

Abstract: ISO/IEC TR 29110-5-1 provides a Software Engineering life cycle reference model for Very Small Entities on small software projects (less than 6 people month). This paper uses Composition Trees (CT) as a formal notation to model part of this process, and compares it with its counterpart process (which is also modeled in a CT) from ISO/IEC 12207. The outcome of the comparison is a Comparison Composition Tree (CCT). This CCT shows clearly the similarity and difference between the VSE Entry Profile and ISC12207. T… Show more

“…In their work, O'Connor and Laporte outlined ISO/IEC 29110 Life Cycle Profiles for Very Small Enterprises and the implementation of pilot project initiatives to provide assistance to VSEs in comprehending the possible usage of the standard. Wen and Rout investigated composition trees to present software processes defined in a VSE Profile and also compared them with software processes defined in ISO/IEC 12207. According to Ribaud et al, software life cycle processes may well appear to very small organizations as secondary management activities.…”

“…34 Other research works are focused on its adoption 35 or focused on SPI experiences. [36][37][38][39] In addition, there are some authors focused on tailored life cycles for VSEs 40 and promoting the use of design patterns by these VSEs. 41 From a project management perspective, there are contributions focused on documenting management aspects in VSEs context.…”

“…[30][31][32][33] Some authors are researching on tailored lifecycles for VSEs through the use of composition trees for modelling processes. 34 From a project management perspective, there are contributions focused on documenting management aspects in VSEs context. 25 From a technical perspective, VSEs should overcome new technologies or approaches such as microservices.…”
