Using Computer-Adaptive Quizzing as a Tool for National Council Licensure Examination Success

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between using computer-adaptive quizzing (CAQ) and first-time National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) success. A retrospective, descriptive, correlational design was used to analyze the relationship between use of a CAQ program and first-time NCLEX results of 194 baccalaureate graduates. Chi-square analysis suggested that there was an association between using the software and NCLEX success (p < .001, df = 1), with 16 percent of those without access compared to 1 per… Show more

“…Adaptive quizzing, a tool to promote remembrance and deep learning (Sartain & Wright, 2021), has several benefits. As students gain familiarity and comfort with electronic test-taking environments, they are exposed to content through self-directed remediation and the scaffolding of information adapted to their individualized rate of learning (Pence & Wood, 2018).…”

“…Nursing managers are also required to be advanced in terms of providing good facilities and infrastructures in the learning process, to employ up-to-date information technology and to update the learning resources used. Pence and Wood (2018) underline that using software and being skillful at managing information technology in the examination will also lead the students to success in the examination, especially in the computer-based test (CBT) examination. Murphy, Goossen, and Weber (2015) also said that educators should have a vision to focus on confirming what informatics competencies are applicable and needed for helping the students in their study and their examination.…”

“…With the introduction of the NCLEX-RN in Canada, faculty in an undergraduate nursing program identified a need to provide learning that focused on enhancing its graduates' likelihood of NCLEX-RN success and that was situated in the Canadian context. Few Canadian resources focused on testing nursing competencies using the same test plan as the NCLEX-RN (Cox-Davenport & Phelan, 2015;Pence & Wood, 2018). Faculty searched for commercially available products that were economically sustainable, accessible to English speaking and Francophone students, and consistent with Canadian perspectives on health care and nursing practice (Salfi & Carbol, 2017).…”

“…While there is some literature describing approaches to helping students achieve NCLEX-RN exam success such as faculty mentoring/coaching programs (Czekanski et al, 2018; Havrilla et al, 2018; Opsahl et al, 2018; Davis & Marrow, 2021) and use of active learning methodologies (Shatto et al, 2019), evidence pointing to certain predictors remains “inconclusive and contradictory” (Pence & Wood, 2018, p. 165). Glasgow et al (2019) suggest that “no single method currently exists that assures the best way to achieve student success on the NCLEX-RN®” (p. 445).…”
