Using Concept Circles to Foster Deeper Understanding of Critical Vocabulary and Concepts

Abstract

Vocabulary inherent in content areas continues to challenge English learners. This vocabulary is critical to understanding key concepts. As grade level increases so does the quantity and complexity of content vocabulary and concepts. English learners can become overwhelmed by the number and complexity of vocabulary in required courses. To assist students in learning vocabulary and content concepts, teachers can utilize graphic organizers, one of which will be discussed in this entry. Concept Circles foster deeper understanding of critical content vocabulary and concepts. The characteristics of Concept Circles that enhance English learners' understanding of content vocabulary and content are also described.
