Using electrical impedance tomography for rapid determination of starch and soluble sugar contents in Rosa hybrida

Abstract: Soluble sugars and starches are important metabolites of plant life and physiological markers of plant stress response. There is an urgent need to develop a non-destructive and rapid method for determining plant starch and soluble sugar contents. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) technology has been used to determine the physiological state and cold resistance of select plant tissues. However, so far there have been no reports on the use of EIT for the rapid estimation of soluble sugar and starch contents.… Show more

“…In the non-enzymatic antioxidant systems, proline plays an important role in scavenging ROS, maintaining osmotic pressure balance, and regulating complex metabolic processes [67]. Soluble sugar, as an important metabolite in plants, also helps to increase osmotic pressure, provides energy and and induces other physiological and biochemical processes [68]. Proline accumulation in plant tissues under abiotic stress conditions leads to osmotic regulation [69], and this is consistent with our results.…”

“…According to the results of cluster analysis, germplasms of different sizes can be screened to meet the diversified needs of the market [ 32 , 33 ]. The soluble sugar content can directly affect the sweetness and taste of chestnut, and the stress resistance of plants is closely related to soluble sugar and starch [ 34 ]. Starch is the main factor affecting the edible quality of chestnut, affecting the taste and quality of processed chestnut food products [ 35 ].…”

“…The content of MDA was determined by the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method [20]; the content of superoxide anion was determined by the hydroxylamine oxidation method [21]; SOD activity was determined by the nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) photoreduction method [20]; POD activity was determined by the guaiacol colorimetry method [20]; the content of soluble sugar and starch were determined by anthrone colorimetry [22]; the content of soluble protein was determined by Coomassie brilliant blue G-250 staining [23]; and the content of free proline was determined by acid ninhydrin staining [21]. Refer to the corresponding literature for specific steps.…”
