Using electrostatic potential maps as visual representations to promote better understanding of chemical bonding

Abstract: Static visual representations (VRs) of chemical structures are necessary for an understanding of chemical bonding, a topic which continues to lead to learning difficulties and misconceptions for many students. The efficacy and problems associated with the use of VRs of chemical structures and chemical bonding in the form of electrostatic potential maps resulting from accurate quantum mechanical calculations are the subject of this study, which involved a sample of first year, second semester students, studying… Show more

“…Regarding π bonds, students find it difficult to conceive of the delocalisation of electrons. This is how the circle used to represent the aromatic character of benzene is interpreted, either as a "reservoir of electrons within the cycle" [38], or as a mixture of single and double bonds which moves along the benzene ring [ 39].…”

“…For this reason, it is viewed as one of the disciplinary core ideas or anchoring concepts in chemistry (Fensham, 1975;Nahum et al, 2010;Hunter et al, 2022). This means that students' mastery of chemistry topics such as reactivity, spectroscopy, organic chemistry, and thermodynamics will be compromised unless theories of chemical bonding are first introduced and instructed (Taber and Coll, 2002;Tsaparlis et al, 2021).…”
